For as long as I can remember I have actually constantly headed to smaller sized rivers and streams to sight fish on the 1st of October however this year I chose to alter it up. Ive been bitten severely by the double handed fly fishing bug this previous winter season and chose to swing flies with a number of mates on the Waitaki river this opening day. Trev and I left a 6am to satisfy excellent mate and fellow guide Will Spry in Omarama prior to heading to Kurow and after that onto the river from there. It was a bleak cold early morning and the fishing was quite sluggish for the very first number of hours, so we altered places and drove down stream anoher couple of km’s to the next acess. The very first huge swimming pool I nailed a good wee 4lb brownie and Trev hooked a huge bow that sadly came unstuck.
We picked up a fast lunch break however moved down stream to a brand-new area, the other 2 young boys chose to switch over to the single handed rods and attempt there luck finding along the edges, drop offs and riffles even more upstream as Will who understands the river quite well reckoned a hatch was on the cards mid arvo. I had actually nailed a number of good fish swinging and was identified to stick to the double hander and it settled with 2 more strong browns and number of break offs right out in front of where we had actually parked our trucks. Trev and Will showed up back about an hour and a half later on and had likewise had success with a couple on the dry.
All up an enjoyable day out with terrific mates fishing some brand-new water and having a couple of laughs!
do not hesitate to call me with any concerns you might have and I still have some excellent dates readily available over Feb and March if your heading to New Zealand and searching for a fly fishing guide.
