If you have actually ever questioned the origins of the world’s most popular fly, the now-out-of-print Fishing Pole & Reel released an excellent interview with Fred Blessing, child of the late Russell True blessing, the male who initially connected a Woolly Bugger method back in the Summertime of Love.
When he produced the fly in 1967, he wasn’t a devoted fly tier like he remained in his later years. He really produced it for smallmouth bass. He wished to develop something comparable to the Dobsonfly lava. He later on included a marabou tail, which produced the Woolly Bugger.
An obscure reality is that the fly was called by True blessing’s 7-year-old child, Julie.
In the video above, Brian Flechsig of Mad River Outfitters in Columbus, Ohio, speaks about why the Woolly Bugger is so popular, discusses a few of the myriad variations on the pattern, and narrates about his own experience fishing Buggers in Yellowstone. It’s fantastic how one fly, came down from a long line of palmered-hackle patterns, might generate numerous replicas.
