Each year, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) thoroughly counts juvenile and adult coho salmon in North Coast rivers and streams. This work is particularly crucial for tracking the status of threatened populations of Central California Coast (CCC) coho.
Last winter season, CDFW personnel recognized they were seeing remarkable varieties of adult salmon going back to Mendocino’s seaside streams throughout their generating run. When the tracking season was over and the numbers were crunched, everybody working to recuperate these populations got some genuinely motivating news:
In 2015, CCC coho salmon returns rose to their greatest numbers considering that comprehensive tracking started. The Noyo and 10 Mile Rivers went beyond the federal Endangered Types Act healing targets, and the Garcia and Big Rivers saw record salmon returns.
