Very first time out with my double hander rod for the year today and young boy it felt great to feel the line tighten up, then the weight go on at the end of the swing! I was stired to land a strong 5lb rainbow together with 4 other fresh wee rainbows in the 2-3lb variety all combating fit and in excellent condition. The takes varied from little ‘taps’ or ‘plucks’ to complete on hits that pulled the fly line from hand. The majority of were at completion of the swing as the fly raised somewhat or on the very first little strip after having the let the fly “hang” in the existing briefly. Sometimes a fish will follow the fly better, up until taking it or declining it. Usually when swinging flies you do not see the fly or the fish and one can just envision and think what is going on under the surface area. Understanding where fish will hold throughout the cold weather and swinging your flies through these pieces of water is the crucial to success.
