On the early morning of Day 4 of Orvis Week in Iceland with Fish Partner, we bid farewell to the Highlands Lodge and drove an hour and a half southeast to the Hotel Grimsborgir, near Selfoss. We dropped our equipment and went out to 2 regional lakes– the enormous Þingvallavatn ( Thingvallavatn) and the smaller sized Villingavatn– searching for arctic char and brown trout. The weather condition as soon as again worked versus us, including some heavy wind and the periodic driving rain. The lakes are embeded in a spectacular landscape amidst sheep farms, with lots of bird life on the coasts. Crazies, arctic terns, hrossagaukurs, and others produce terrific watching … although if you get too near their nests, things can get testy.

After a rough very first day of fighting conditions simply to get a good erupted, the 2nd session of the lakes was rather much better: rain-free however still gusty. The fish stayed ugly, nevertheless, travelling the coastline however not truly thinking about consuming. The exceptions were Eric and Samantha, who exemplified the right-place, right-time, right-fly circumstance. While everybody else had a hard time to draw a strike, they hooked 6 char, landing 5. Odd days, undoubtedly.

Even after a challenging last day of fishing, the state of mind in the hotel bar was joyful, as our guides joined us for a last beer and a group image. Later on, at supper, everybody broached strategies to go back to Iceland for both the fishing and the unbelievable sights. When you get a taste of this exceptional land, you desire more.
