Dear Oregon Fly Fishing Blog Site,
As summertime unwind I’m getting thrilled for fall fishing. Generally around mid October we start to see October caddis hatches in addition to the periodic callibaetis. It’s enjoyable to fish October caddis since it’s the time we start to utilize larger flies (Stimulators Size 10) and start to see a few of the larger fish travelling the riffles and swimming pools.
With record low snowpack and high heat, the dry fly action this season was the worst I have actually seen. The Merced River was striking 74 ° in early August so fishing was not a choice (STOP FISHING @ 69 °) so I removed down south to chase after Corbina with my pal Rob.
September was high nation lakes and skinning water streams. We needed to hunt and cover great deals of water to discover fish, however nymphing produced quality rainbow and brook trout.
As I compose this we’re starting to get rain and cooler weather condition, so the Merced has actually been fishing once again, mostly with nymphs. I anticipate the dry fly action to get over the next couple of weeks and ideally the fish are moving.
October and November are my preferred months to fish the Sierra. Much shorter days, cooler temperatures, and caddis action!
Rob and I will be on the Deschutes late October and we’re appreciative the river opened this year. 2021 was depressing on the D and I consider all the guides out there needing to alter their tactical plan or possibly alter professions. Sucks, however it’s the truth.
Tight lines,
Greg
