Standard fly fishing strategy for capturing brown and rainbow trout in stillwaters in New Zealand.
The rig I’m utilizing:
# 5 rod and drifting line, connected to a 9′ (2.74 m) 3X (8lb) tapered leader.
To there, I connect a strong micro ring, and from the micro ring I connect a big, extremely noticeable yarn leader.
This leader can be moved more detailed to the flies in shallower water, or closer to the fly line in much deeper water. In this circumstances, I’m fishing water around 2.5-4m deep.
Connected onto the micro ring is a 6′ (1.5 m) length of 4X (6lb) fluorocarbon.
To the end of the fluoro, a ‘fancy’ attractor nymph, with a little shimmer, sizes # 12-14. Gold bead flash back, is a fine example of among these attractor patterns.
To the bend of the attractor patterns hook, tie on another 1’6″ (45cm) of 4X fluoro to the point fly.
The point fly is a more natural nymph, like a pheasant tail or damselfly replica, around a size # 12-16.
Cast into the channels in between weed beds, and wait.
