Connecting Tuesday is back and all set for some more trout-focused goodness! A style throughout the flies I picked for today’s post is the self-confidence anglers have in them. Tim Cammisa swears by the X-Caddis, the folks at Mainely Flies enjoy the Squiggle, and Higa’s SOS is the meaning of a self-confidence fly. It’s a fascinating idea to think of, because I reckon we fish much better with flies we’re more positive in than those we aren’t.
The very first fly is from Tim Cammisa, and it’s his take on the X-Caddis. Tim believes the X-Caddis may be the supreme “self-confidence dry fly.” He even states if he needed to choose simply a single dry fly to fish with the rest of his summer seasons, it ‘d be this fly! Connecting it isn’t too complicated, although dealing with deer hair can be an obstacle. Tim strolls you through it, however, and if you resemble me, you’ll most likely put a few of these in your box for the upcoming summertime.
Up next is a fly that the folks at Mainely Flies state “breaks the guidelines.” I’m not exactly sure if there are any “guidelines” to be broken in fly connecting, however the Squiggle is a fascinating take on the traditional Squirmy Worm. It appears like it may be more resilient than the basic Squirmy, too.
Concluding is a sort of follow-up to a video from our last Tying Tuesday, where we found out how to connect Higa’s SOS. In this video from Fly Fish Food, Spencer Higa himself offers all the information on the origin of the SOS. For anybody wanting to develop their own flies, there may be some insight here.
